Durability: Where the Two Finishes Really Differ

Durability is not one number. It is a handful of separate battles — chips, corrosion, UV, brake dust and chemical cleaners — and the two finishes win and lose different fights.

Chip Resistance

Corrosion Resistance

Western Cape drivers have a specific enemy: salt. The sea air in Blouberg, Table View and along the coast deposits salt onto wheels constantly, and brake dust adds a corrosive, acidic layer on top if wheels are not cleaned regularly.

Powder coating wins here too. The baked polymer film is essentially impermeable — water, salt and brake dust sit on the surface rather than soaking into it. Paint is only as good as its clear coat. UV and Fading

Modern powder is excellent under UV. High-quality polyurethane and hybrid powders hold their colour for years in direct sun. Cheaper polyester powders can chalk or dull over time, which is why the quality of the powder and the oven matters.

Paint fades and oxidises faster if the clear coat is weak. Good two-pack clear coats with UV stabilisers hold up well; cheap single-stage paints fade, dull and go chalky within a couple of years of constant sun.

Chemical Resistance

Powder coating is almost bulletproof against the chemicals in normal wheel cleaners. A good powder coat can shrug off acidic cleaners that would etch or soften paint. This is a big practical advantage because many wheel cleaners on the South African market are far more aggressive than they need to be.

How Long Does Each Finish Actually Last?

Put the rounds together and here is the realistic picture for a wheel that is regularly driven and reasonably cared for:

  • Powder coating: 5–10+ years before it needs redoing, with most failures caused by physical impact (kerb, pothole, stone) rather than natural degradation. Many of the powder jobs we see coming back into the shop for colour changes are still in perfect condition.
  • Wet paint: 3–6 years on average, depending heavily on the quality of the clear coat and how the car is driven and parked. A well-applied two-pack system on a garage-kept car can match powder for years; a budget paint job on a car that lives outside in a coastal suburb can fail within two.

Where Wet Paint Still Beats Powder

Colour range. Powder has come a long way, but it still cannot match wet paint for variety. Metallic flake, candies, chameleons, pearlescents and exact colour-matching to a factory paint code are all far easier in liquid paint. Repairability. A painted wheel is easier to touch up. A small chip can be sanded, feathered and re-cleared without stripping the wheel. Thinner film on tight areas. Powder coats more thickly, which can be a problem on finely machined or multi-spoke designs where a thick coat fills in crisp edges or affects the fit of centre caps and lug holes. Paint lays down thinner and keeps detail sharper.

No oven required. Powder needs a bake; paint cures at workshop temperature. For quick colour changes on a single wheel or for shops without ovens, paint is the practical option — though you usually sacrifice durability for that convenience.
